The Ojai Writers’ Workshops & Conference was created by writers for writers. The writers associated with OWC are:

Sequoia Hamilton – Founder
Pink lip gloss-headshotSequoia Hamilton is a storyteller whose modern day tribe includes fellow writers, artists, and filmmakers.

Former editor of a national travel magazine and author of more than 1,000 traditional and online articles, Sequoia’s writes on adventure travel, business, money, the arts, food and consciousness. She authors and contributes to more than 20 blogs on these topics.

She’s been published by Penguin Random House (the largest publisher of trade books in the world) and was a producer on a documentary film which aired on PBS and won an Emmy for writing.

She’s currently working playing with an anthology Delicious Paris: Savory Stories and Sweet Desserts and ghostwriting a client’s business book while penning one of her own.

“I write and live the way I cook — whipping up several things at once to create a feast!” states Sequoia.

Sequoia has led writing and cultural trips around the world including Sing Sings in Papua New Guinea, Treks in the Himalayas of Nepal, Writing Retreats in Paris and Art Tours through Florence.

Her stories have appeared in Forbes, CNN, MTV, Good Morning America, Los Angeles Times and other media.

She  was profiled by Steve Jobs of Apple in a “Cool Creatives”promo, has been interviewed on Good Morning America and featured in a 30-minute episode on Home and Garden Television (HGTV) after she pitched a show idea.

In her earlier years, she was a national collegiate speech champion, awarded “Most Outstanding Drama Student” in the history of her high school, and awarded numerous scholarships to college for journalism, speech and broadcast communications.

Her education includes Art Center College of Design in Pasadena (Advertising/Graphic Design), the University of Missouri in Joplin, Missouri (Communications) and Stanford University Graduate School of Business (Innovation & Entrepreneurship).

Prior to being at the helm of The Hamilton Group, she ran Swell Creative Group, spearheaded the Creative Department for Kinko’s World Headquarters including being the team leader of 50+ employees launching Kinko’s website on a SuperBowl commercial, and was the was the Director of International Special Events for the most successful charity in the history of the United States, Habitat for Humanity. She has also been involved in Television as a series Creator, Producer, Writer and Talent.

As a philanthropist and humanitarian, Sequoia has fundraised more than $1 million for charities focused on the arts and affordable housing including: fundraising to build 200 houses in Tanzania for women heads-of-households; three libraries in Nepal for women in prisons; launching the annual Earth Day celebration in association with the city of Ventura (and was the volunteer chairperson for two years to get it off the ground); and co-founding Ojai WordFest, a weekend literary festival in her hometown of Ojai.

Karly Young – Producer
Writer, producer and director, Karly Young, is a former 20th Century Fox Filmed Entertainment executive responsible for marketing, managing and launching some of the most successful entertainment brands in the world including The Simpsons, Aliens, Aliens vs Predator, Planet of the Apes, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, et al.

Young’s professional portfolio includes working with first-class organizations and companies including Disney Interactive, Konami, U.S. National Park Service, Lockheed Martin (F-22 Raptor), Boeing (Comanche), U.S. Army (Comanche, Armored Fist), U.S. Air Force Memorial Foundation (F16, F-22 Raptor, F-22 Lightning II) and Vivendi-Universal to name a few.

Young has orchestrated large-scale productions for video game launches, non-profit organizations, entertainment companies and software publishers/developers. Her successful unprecedented media events include the Armored Fist video game launch at Ft. Hunter Liggett, California in cooperation with the US Army which included tank drives, M16 and M60 target practice and live-fire demonstrations for media members and game crew; Comanche video game event with US aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, which featured the first flight for the media of the Comanche RAH-66 advanced helicopter and included reporters’ flights in helicopters conducting various flight maneuvers; and spearheading thematic crowd-wowing exhibitions at the world’s premiere video games and computer trade show, E3.

Recently, Young ventured into the realm of ETs and the alien-abduction phenomena with the development of a commissioned TV documentary series pilot, called ET Investigations, and the production of the 2011 feature film, Darkening Sky (Finalist, Hollywood Film Festival 2010). She is currently writing and developing several new projects for both film and TV under her production banner, Jones Creek Productions, with her bff since childhood, Mary Sequoia Hamilton.
