Ojai’s unique east-west mountain orientation and deep valley attracted the Chumash Indians, the original inhabitants of this area who revered the land as a healing “nest” and therefore sacred. Frequently they would take those needing “re-energizing” to the sacred sulfur springs for soaking.

Ancient and contemporary spiritual seekers ascribe mystical powers to this valley calling it a “vortex” and claim its energy has the ability to “awaken” people on many levels. Writers from around the world have come here to start, work on or finish their writings. Join us for SPA-tacular Writing and do both!

Find inspiration for your writing projects in Ojai’s serene beauty. There are no big box retailers or “chain” stores – and with its citrus, lavender fields and olive oil groves, well, it feels a bit like a European vacation.

You’ll feel right at home … and yet a million miles away.xoox108

Sitting on 24 acres with over 5,000 lavender plants, 1,400 olive trees, 24 walnut trees and several pixie tangerine trees.

11 a.m.: We head back down the hill to the wonderful area called the East End. Our next stop is to a 130 year old olive grove, still in use today and expanded to a working ranch, where some of the best extra virgin oils in the world are being produced by Ojai Olive Oil, Inc. Seven olive varieties are grown on the Asquith Ranch and recognized as among the best extra virgin olive oils in the world by Germany’s leading gourmet magazine, Der Feinschmecher. Visiting the working ranch in a Mediterranean setting will feel like a slice of Tuscan sunshine. You’ll see the nursery and how the olives are picked by hand and cold-pressed within hours of harvest. There’s a tasting room and, of course, a retail area to purchase products including flavored olive oils, soaps and face creams. (We recommend the pure Olive Oil face cream and the flavored vinegars, especially Blackberry Ginger!)

2 p.m. — Visit Meditation Mount, a sacred site on 32 acres of land at the east end of the Ojai Valley. The Mount is a remarkable place of peace and beauty. It is part of a growing global network of groups and individuals who practice meditation as a service to humanity and the world – and who honor the natural world by providing a sanctuary for visitors to connect to the sacred quality of all life. We’ll be visiting the International Garden of Peace for a bit of quiet reflection.

The following poem was written by a 12-year old girl who captured so beautifully the spirit of The Mount.

Meditation Mount
The sun is a dandelion, and
the day is bright, and
I am holding sunbeams in my palms.
The mountains are stony,
and a green of emerald flourishes
while a cool breeze sweeps
through the bushes and trees,
making the flowers and the leaves
pirouette in the wind.
The sky is a blue sea, and the
clouds are white waves
streaking across the sky
like strokes of white paint.
And the mountains’ stony
gazes watch over me while I
